Physicians who practice medicine within Snohomish County and hold a degree of Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy and hold an un-revoked and unsuspended license to practice medicine and surgery issued by the Medical Board of Washington or Board of Osteopathic Examiners of the State of Washington are eligible to apply for membership in the Snohomish County Medical Society.
The SCMS is a unified county medical society. This means that in order to belong to SCMS, membership is required in the WSMA, and vice versa. The bylaws of both organizations support this condition of membership. Because the SCMS provides physician referrals, a membership application is required and is subject to approval by the SCMS Board of Trustees.
The SCMS and the WSMA offer a variety of benefits and services to it members. From looking out for physicians at the state legislature and the US Congress, to educating the news media and general public on health care, the WSMA and SCMS are regularly assisting and working for physicians.
To become a member in SCMS and WSMA, simply complete the membership application and return it to the Snohomish County Medical Society, 2033 Sixth Avenue, Suite 1100, Seattle, WA 98121. With your application, please provide a copy of your Washington State License. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact the SCMS office at (206) 956-3646, or via e-mail addressed to mst@wsma.org.
Why Should I Become A Member of the Snohomish County Medical Society?
Services & Benefits for Members
-
Professional/Collegial Activities provide opportunity for physicians
to be involved in political activities and to meet with colleagues for business
or social purposes. The Medical Society is one of the few places in the medical
environment where physicians of all types of practice, all insurance affiliations
and all specialties can come together for collegial purposes, legislative
efforts and community health projects. The Medical Society sponsors several
general membership meetings each year where members can join with colleagues
for dinner and an informational or entertaining program.
Hundreds of physician referrals are given per year by the Medical
Society office when patients need referrals to a doctor or request information
about physicians listed on their health plans. SCMS provides information about
Medical Society members ONLY.
Practice management workshops from the WSMA focusing on office
practice management issues are examples of "looking after physicians' best
interests" at the local level.
Offices receive a monthly Medical News "Update" bulletin
by fax from the Medical Society focusing on timely local, regional or national
health issues
SCMS Membership Directory
Hundreds of SCMS Directories with pictures and information about all Medical
Society members are distributed to physicians, hospitals and health-related
organizations and personnel.
Mailing Labels containing the Medical Society's physicians
and their office addresses are available to each member for a nominal fee.
The Medical Society is a resource for general information relating
to medical practice and usually is able to link the physician with a source
to find needed information if the Society does not have it available.
Advance Healthcare Directive/ POLST forms gives one the ability
to insure that his/her health care wishes are known and considered if he/she
becomes unable to make these decisions him/herself. The POLST forms are available
from the WSMA through the Snohomish County Medical Society. Call for information:
(206) 956-3646.
SCMS maintains close contact with state legislators through the
WSMA who represent the local area. This contact allows SCMS to educate
and influence our representatives when medical issues are debated and voted
on in the State Legislature.
